How to Choose Hallway Light Fixtures That Fit Your Home

Granted, most homeowners spare some effort into designing their living room and making sure the kitchen feels right at night, but the hallway is an area that often ends up with leftovers. It’s easy to think of it as just a functional space, but the right light fixture combined with some decorating can turn it into one of the most memorable parts of your home, especially when welcoming guests.

It’s easy to overlook this area because hallways are inherently functional, though if you pair the right dรฉcor and lighting, the entryway can become a key part of the home. Your hallway is the first thing guests see when they come through your door. It frames the rest of the home before they’ve even reached the living room. Getting the lighting right doesn’t require a big budget or a complete overhaul. It just requires a little more intention than most of us give it

Hallways Do More Work Than We Give Them Credit For

Think about how many times you walk down your hallway each day. Itโ€™s the glue that connects each room in your home; it’s what you first see when you enter from outside, and, in open-floor-plan homes, it’s often visible from the common areas. Thoughtfully selected hallway lighting fixtures bring a sense of cohesion to the entire home, even when no one can pinpoint exactly why.

The Sunset Ceiling Light Fixture

Hallways typically lack natural light, so your light fixtures have to do most of the work. A poorly lit hallway feels claustrophobic and bland. A well-lit one feels like a deliberate element of the home, rather than simply a transitional passage you barely notice. It really is one of those places where the right fixture can silently work wonders.

Get the Size Right

A common pitfall when choosing hallway light fixtures is selecting fixtures that are too small. A light that seems perfectly sized for a bathroom may seem insignificant when used in a hallway, especially if it’s lengthy. We generally recommend sizing up from what you initially think you’ll need. It almost always looks better.

For longer hallways, spacing several smaller fixtures evenly is often a better choice than installing a single large fixture to illuminate the entire length. This approach distributes light more naturally and appears more considered.

The El Segundo Hallway Light Fixture

We often recommend our 12″ dome fixture, the El Segundo, for exactly this purpose. It’s a good middle-ground size; not too overwhelming for tight spaces, but still substantial enough to make a statement in a larger entryway. It’s one of our most versatile sizes and frequently comes up when we help customers find the perfect fit for their hallway.

The Entryway and Hallway Should Feel Connected

When your hallway opens directly from your entryway, it’s essential for the two spaces to feel harmonious. A good rule of thumb is to maintain consistency in finishes between them. If you’ve opted for matte black fixtures in the entryway, carry that same finish into the hallway. Trying to mix too many different finishes in a small, connected space can create a cluttered rather than a deliberate look. We always suggest considering entryway and hallway lighting together rather than separately.

A pendant light works exceptionally well in an entryway with enough ceiling height. It draws the eye upward and gives guests something interesting to look at the moment they step inside. Our 14″ Sunset pendant, with its intriguing double-bowl design, offers a sculptural quality that makes it a natural focal point for that initial impression. It casts a warm glow downward while adding a bit of visual interest from above, and it’s one of our personal favorites for entryways.

Classic Fixtures Are Worth Your Attention Too

The Carson is an excellent option to consider. This 16″ dome pendant is constructed from the same robust steel as our most popular barn light, but re-engineered for ceiling mounting. It embodies a classic American aesthetic that complements both rustic and modern interiors, and it’s available in a rigid stem, flush mount, or braided cord, allowing you to tailor it to your specific ceiling type and design style. It’s also UL listed for indoor and outdoor use, making it a practical choice for covered entryways as well.

Cone Pendants Are Having a Moment

One trend we’ve observed is the resurgence of the cone pendant in residential spaces, and hallways are an ideal location to incorporate one. The cone shape directs light downward, which is particularly effective in narrower areas, and a well-chosen cone pendant in a hallway can add character without overwhelming the space.

The Moorpark Ceiling Light Fixture

The Moorpark is a 14″ cone pendant handcrafted in American steel that we often recommend when clients are looking for something unique. It comes in a wide array of color choices, cord options, and mounting styles, making it remarkably easy to integrate into any design direction your home is taking.

A Small Note on Bulb Temperature

This might be a tiny detail but it makes all the difference in your hallways. We always recommend warm white bulbs ranging from 2700K-3000K for hallways. This ensures that your transition from room to room is smooth and pleasant for the eye, as during the evening, entering a dark hallway from a bright room is rather jolting.

If your hallway fixture is dimmable, it is a good idea to combine it with a dimmer switch as well. A hallway can transition from bright lighting during the day to more mellow light at night making it a much more liveable space.

Good Lighting Is the Detail People Remember (even if they donโ€™t consciously say it)

People rarely say “Oh what beautiful hallway lights” when they enter your house. But they do remark on the fact that a home is welcoming as soon as they enter it, which starts in the hallways. It is a very small investment, but hallway fixtures set the overall tone of the home before people even see the living room.
