Understanding Flush Mount Lights
Flush mount lights are fixtures attached directly to the ceiling without any gap. They are ideal for spaces with low ceilings or where a protruding fixture would obstruct the flow or look of the room. Flush mounts are more subtle than stem or cord-mounts and are designed to blend seamlessly with the ceiling.
Choosing the Right Size
The size of the flush mount light should be proportional to the space it’s intended to illuminate:
- Small Rooms (e.g., bathrooms, small hallways): Opt for fixtures with a diameter of 12 inches or less.
- Medium Rooms (e.g., medium bedrooms, kitchens): Choose fixtures with a diameter of 13 to 18 inches.
- Large Rooms (e.g., large living areas, commercial spaces like garages): Larger fixtures with diameters of 18 inches or more are suitable. For instance, a fixture like the Manhattan would be appropriate for large, open spaces with high ceilings.
Considering Light Output
The brightness needed from a flush mount light depends on its location and the type of activities it will illuminate:
- General Ambience: A soft light output in a warmer temperature is sufficient for areas where a cozy, relaxing atmosphere is desired.
- Task Lighting: Brighter, more focused light is needed in areas like kitchens, offices, or workspaces. In places like barns or garages, a high-output fixture like the Carson, designed for large and open spaces, is ideal.
- Accent Lighting: For highlighting architectural features or artworks, a directed light with moderate brightness can be used, such as the Inglewood.
Selecting the Location
Where you place your flush mount light affects both its functionality and style impact:
- Entryways and Hallways: Provides general lighting, welcoming and guiding through the space, the El Segundo is a good choice here.
- Bedrooms and Living Rooms: Offers ambient lighting, can be combined with lamps for added warmth. Our recommendation is the Carson or Eagle Rock.
- Kitchens and Bathrooms: Needs to be bright and functional, as these areas require good visibility for tasks. The Inglewood, Malibu & El Segundo are smaller domes with adequate lighting for these areas.
- Utility Areas (e.g., laundry rooms, barns): Robust, more industrial styles like the Manhattan and Carson are suitable here, offering both adequate illumination and fitting the rustic or utilitarian decor.
